Bitcoin Payments in OpenClaw — the Fast and Secure Way

Learn how to connect and use any bitcoin wallet with OpenClaw in a fast and secure way.

The OpenClaw Phenomenon

If you’ve been tracking GitHub’s trending repositories lately, you’ve witnessed history in the making. OpenClaw has shattered every open-source record, surpassing 280,000 stars in just 60 days. OpenClaw outpaced even industry titans like React and the Linux kernel. But OpenClaw isn’t just another chatbot; it’s a "local-first" AI agent that lives where we spend a lot of time: in our Telegram, Discord, and Slack DMs. Instead of just answering questions, OpenClaw acts. It can manage emails, coordinate complex workflows, and even negotiate deals while you sleep.

The Rise of Agentic Payments

However, as these agents move from conversation to execution, they hit a fundamental wall: the payment wall. This is where Agentic Payments come in. To truly be autonomous, an agent needs the ability to initiate, authorize, and verify financial transactions. Whether it’s paying for a specialized API, settling a micro-invoice for data, or purchasing cloud credits, the ability for software to hold and move value is the "missing link" of the agent economy. Without a way to pay, an agent is just a planner; with a wallet, it becomes a sovereign participant in the global economy.

Alby: Leading the Charge in AI & Bitcoin

At Alby, we believe that for agentic payments to work at scale, they need a foundation that is instant, global, and programmatic. This is why Alby is leading the way by merging bitcoin’s lightning network with the AI agent revolution. By leveraging open protocols like Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC) or 402 payment required protocols like L402, x402 and MPP, Alby provides the infrastructure that allows agents to pay for what they need without human intervention for every cent spent. We are building the "financial nervous system" for the next generation of autonomous software.

Bridging the Gap: Alby Builder and Payments Skills

To make it effortless for developers to give their agents payment capabilities, we’ve released three key tools designed specifically for the agentic workflow:

  • Alby Payments Skill: This "teaches" agents how to interact with Alby Hub, your self-custodial bitcoin lightning wallet. It provides a standardized way to check balances and pay invoices via simple command-line instructions, removing the risk of "hallucinations" when dealing with real money.

  • Alby Builder Skill: This allows agents to scaffold and build entire bitcoin-ready applications, teaching your agent how to wire up payments and handle wallet logic directly.

  • Alby Hub Skill: This lets your favorite agent manage your Alby Hub with commands like "Set up my Alby Hub.", "Open an inbound lightning channel." or "Create a new NWC app connection called 'My Store' with a monthly budget of 50,000 sats."

In this article we only focus on the Alby Payments Skill and share instructions on how to use it.

Give your OpenClaw agent a wallet in 2 steps

Step 1: Get your NWC connection URL

  • Start your own Alby Hub -> Visit the Connections page -> Click on “Add Connection”

  • Or: Pick any other NWC-enabled wallet → create and copy the NWC connection secret URL  nostr+walletconnect://...

Step 2: Connect your wallet to OpenClaw

  • Open Alby Hub and visit the AI & Agent page -> Copy the provided prompt and share it with your agent.

  • Or tell OpenClaw: "Install this custom skill:  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/getAlby/payments-skill/master/SKILL.md and save this NWC connection secret: nostr+walletconnect://… as your default wallet."

Use your OpenClaw agent

Send and receive payments

Ask your agent to send a payment to any lightning address.. For example: “Send 2100 satoshis to roland@getalby.com with the comment: Thanks for building this Payment Skill.”

Buy services

You can also use your agent to buy data and services on a pay-per-call basis. No subscriptions or custom API integrations required. For example: “Use https://www.pullthatupjamie.ai/api/pull to find recent mentions of Alby Hub in podcasts.”

The service charges 10 satoshis. Your agent handles the payment after your confirmation and returns three podcast clips from two different shows, grouped by theme and connected with contextual summaries.

Discover more services like this in the AI & Agent section of your Alby Hub.

Real-World Impact: The OpenClaw Integration

The community is already seeing the potential of this combination. Developers are highlighting the necessity of a "sovereign payment layer" for agents. The consensus is clear: for a tool like OpenClaw to truly automate a user's life, it needs to be able to settle small debts and purchase resources on the fly. By integrating Alby’s skills, OpenClaw instances can now move beyond simple task management and begin interacting with the paid web, unlocking use cases like automated bounty hunting, purchasing the best gift card, and trading based on financial data analysis.
